Decugnano dei Barbi
About Decugnano dei Barbi
Decugnano dei Barbi is a boutique winery located just outside Orvieto in Umbria, with a winemaking history that dates back to 1212. Revived in 1973 by Claudio Barbi, the estate quickly became a pioneer in the region, even producing Umbria’s first traditional-method sparkling wine. The vineyards sit atop ancient seabed soils rich in marine fossils, lending a distinctive minerality and salinity to the wines. Now run by Claudio’s son Enzo, the estate continues its legacy with a focus on sustainable viticulture and a thoughtful blend of innovation and tradition, crafting expressive wines that reflect the beauty and complexity of their unique terroir.
Why We Love Decugnano dei Barbi
It’s a rare blend of deep history, visionary innovation, heart behind the wine, and unwavering commitment to quality. As both a talented winemaker and genuinely warm human being, Enzo Barbi brings a personal touch to every aspect of the estate. Few estates can claim vineyard roots as far back, yet still feel so forward-thinking. Set on fossil-rich hills, the vineyards yield elegant, mineral-driven wines that are as thoughtful and expressive as the man who makes them. With Enzo at the helm, Decugnano is more than just a historic winery—it’s a living story of passion, humility, and place.
